I like the middle.
The cream in an Oreo;
The chorus in a song;
The verb in a sentence;
The climax in a story.
Every relationship has a middle.
Those butterflies in the beginning are nice
but fleeting.
The passion is
amazing
but it subsides.
The middle is my favorite because then I know you.
Yet there are surprises.
Like when you tell me your favorite song is Eric Clapton’s “The Way You Look Tonight”
and not Jay-Z’s “99 Problems” like when we first met.
Or when you start rooting for my favorite basketball team
after I got mad at you for saying we won’t win this year.
The middle is my favorite because it’s comfortable.
Not in a boring way,
but in a way that makes you mine.
In a way that lets me know you know me better than anyone.
The middle is my favorite because it’s not the end.
And there’s always an end to beautiful things.
