Langston Hughes, “Impasse”
"Reading was my escape and my comfort, my consolation, my stimulant of choice: reading for the pure pleasure of it, for the beautiful stillness that surrounds you when you hear an author’s words reverberating in your head."
For Raymond Chandler's birthday today, his collected wisdom on writing from a lifetime of letters
As many as 15 percent of freshmen at America’s top schools are white students who failed to meet their university’s minimum standards for admission, according to Peter Schmidt, deputy editor of the Chronicle of Higher Education. These kids are “people with a long-standing relationship with the university,” or in other words, the children of faculty, wealthy alumni and politicians.
According to Schmidt, these unqualified but privileged kids are nearly twice as common on top campuses as Black and Latino students who had benefited from affirmative action."
does tumblr not understand the concept of characters being complex people, who are not just either good or bad?
just because snape was abusive (i’m not denying that he was, i’m not minimalizing it) dosen’t mean the good things he did don’t matter and have no relevance.
Harry didn’t say he was kind, good natured or charitable. He didn’t even say he was a good person. He said he was brave.
And he was undeniably brave. He risked everything by being a double agent, constantly a hair’s breathe from being found out and tortured or killed, having to watch innocent people die and get tortured in front of him without being able to do anything or show any emotion, having to train himself to completely conceal his thoughts and emotions.
In the end, he ended up having to kill basically his only friend. He completely isolated himself from human contact in the process of doing his duty and gave up any chance of being able to live a normal life.
Also, let me add that he agreed to an UNBREAKABLE VOW with Narcissa Malfoy to help her protect her son, even though it could’ve jeapordized his mission and rendered the entire thing useless.
TELL ME THAT’S NOT BRAVE.
there are just so many obvious things about internalized misogyny„ homophobia, and compulsory heterosexuality and how all of the work against girls that aren’t… talked about? when they are it’s in this doctrinaire ideological bs way that i can’t relate to, i’m just talking experiences. like honestly you’re pretty ignorant if you don’t think the majority of lesbians in the world, globally and historically, have ended up with men or compromised that part of themselves to find some way to be happy with a man/hetero family/whatever. that by and large, it is such an essential part of the experience of being a woman, even in the most career-driven choice-obsessed liberal feminist circles, and how this works wrt bi women as well.
even as a gay girl i can’t tell you how much more secure and bonded and linked i have felt with girls when talking about men, or griping about them, or back when i dated them, or agreeing with them on a guy being hot (when in reality i’m apathetic to it), etc. it becomes this culture that you get accepted into, and it feels good to not be alienated. it feels good to feed off of each others excitement and understanding and mutual frustrations. it’s such a much larger support system and doesn’t give you the same gross feelings that you get when you talk about girls around them, or the same “wow, am i alienating THEM?” feeling. it feels much better than dealing with all of the internalized homophobia and misogyny of other queer girls, and you know it’s not empowering. you tally and notice small things like every time a girl talks about a guy as opposed to girls, and the difference in how their friends light up and get excited.
sometimes it seems like the “gayer” choice to be practicing-straight if it means you’ll have way more support and love from girls around you and not face the hurt of their rejection. why not join in on their gross dumb straight bs? also, this way, you’re not a creep. you’re not harming other girls or objectifying them, and they can’t break your heart the same way. if you can’t beat them then join them.
is it weird that i talk about this? i feel like i never see this discussion.
